Getting enough sleep at appropriate timings, synchronized with our biological clock, remarkably affects all the vital functions in our body. Sleep is a natural way of repairing, recovering, and rejuvenating the body. It’s our body’s natural detox regime. Here are the four major sleep stages that we go through every time we sleep:
Stage 1: The transitional phase
In this stage, which lasts for several minutes, we are partially awake. Our muscles start to relax. Our eyes struggle to remain open. Our brain activity starts slowing down. It is quite easy to wake we up at this stage.
Stage 2: Slightly deeper sleep
The heart rate begins to slow down. Our body temperature decreases slightly. The eye movement stops and brain activity starts to slow.
Stage 3: Deep sleep
The brain activity decreases significantly. Blood pressure drops. Breathing becomes deeper and slower. Our brain releases hormones that help replenish our muscles and tissues. These hormone also control our growth and appetite. The blood flow to muscles increases providing our exhausted muscles with excessive oxygen. This stage is the hardest to wake up from.
Stage 4: Rapid Eye Movement or REM
This is the stage when we dream. The brain becomes hyperactive. Except your heart and lungs, all other muscles of our body become temporarily paralyzed. Breathing becomes irregular. Our heart rate and blood pressure rise. We start waking up at the end of this stage
Sleep is important for our physical and mental wellness. A lot happens in our body while we are asleep. So, always sleep well.
